The difficulties of continuous blood glucose monitoring
Medical devices with CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) technology allow continuous monitoring of glucose in the patient's blood in real time.
These products are especially important for people with diabetes. Such devices usually consist of three elements:
-
Glucose sensor
-
Monitors
-
Software
The sensor of the CGMS determines the concentration of glucose in the tissue fluid by electrochemical method. The enzyme glucose oxidase is applied to the sensor electrode, which catalyzes glucose, resulting in the formation of hydrogen peroxide. During this chemical reaction, an electrical signal is generated, the intensity of which is proportional to the concentration of glucose in the physiological environment of the sensor. The sensor of the CGMS processes an electrical signal and outputs a digital signal transmitted to mobile applications or web versions of software, which is usually included in such products.
In 2025, many residents of the Russian Federation faced the problem of remote glucose monitoring services when the mobile Internet was turned off. Service disruptions are due to the fact that some components of many services are located abroad.
Currently, this issue is being actively worked out. In particular, in the 1st quarter of 2026, it is expected that such services will be included in the "white list" of sites of Ministry for Digital Technology, Communication and Mass Media of the Russian Federation. In addition, the Rostec Group has established the production of domestic CGMS products.
In the register of registered medical devices of Roszdravnadzor, 9 products with the name "continuous glucose monitoring system" were found, 6 of them were registered in 2025, 4 of them are Russian-made products, the rest are manufactured in China.
